Gray, 82, of Garrett, died Nov. 2, 1997, in Lee Hospital, Johnstown. Born Feb. 2, 1915, in Elk Lick Township, Somerset County, a son of the late John A. and Dorothea Mae (Rittenour) Gray. Preceded in death by brothers Carl, James and John Jr. and sister Ethel. Survived by his widow, Lily (Diehl) Gray, and three sons: Dr. Jerry L. and his wife Margaret (Hrusha) of Windber; James L. and his wife Jill (Rounyak) of San Antonio, Texas, and Glenn A. and his wife Mary (Merkel) of Garrett; grandchildren: Christian, James J. Jr. and wife Valerie; Gregory and wife Ellen, Stephen, Matthew and wife Ellen; Patrick, Nathan, Thomas Hughes, Sara Hallett and Tina Hennssye. Great-grandchildren: Whitney, Ethan, Josh, Elisha, Doug and Nicole. Also survived by brothers Paul and wife Eva, and Wayde and wife Betty, both of Ravenna, Ohio. Life member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, Garrett. Member of Meyersdale American Legion, DAV and United Mine Workers. Past commander of Garrett American Legion. Veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal with Co. C 25th Armored Engineer Batt. 6th Armor Div., Third Army. He received the Purple Heart medal with one Oak Leaf Custer, Silver Star, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Leckemby Funeral Home, Meyersdale. Wednesday he will be taken to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church to lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service with Pastor Randall Marburger and Pastor Ken Davis. Interment, Highland Cemetery, Garrett.
