Gress, 85, died suddenly, May 11, 1984, while working in his garden at San Diego, California. Mr. Gress was born February 8, 1899 in Meyersdale, the son of Valentine W. and Sarah (Kuehnemann) Gress, both German immigrants. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Walter Gress. He is survived by his wife, Pauline, and his twin brother, Dr. Howard R. Gress, of Orlando, Florida, several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gress attended the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State College, graduating from George Washington University. He went to San Diego in 1940 with the USO to counsel the army and navy personnel at the YMCA until the end of World War II. Previously he had taught in the High Schools of Salisbury and Altoona. Mr. Gress taught in the Psychology Department of San Diego State University. He also attended the Blind Center at Palo Alto for several months and while there wrote an article on "Degeneration of the Macula" which was published in the Congressional Record at Washington, D.C. Mr. Gress was a member of many organizations including the Rotary Club in Pa., the Phi Delta Kappa, the Shriners, the Knights Templar and the First Presbyterian Church of San Diego. He was a WWI veteran. A memorial service was held Thursday, May 17, in the Scottish Rite Temple in Mesaien Valley. Meyersdale Republic, May 24, 1984. [G0986]
