Born May 5, 1883, in Garrett, he was a son of the late Julius and Catherine (Lichty) Grew. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Mary Plitt, and three children, George, Lawrence and Mrs. Eva Courtney. Surviving are his widow, the former Ellen Firl, and these children, Carl and Earl, both of Meyersdale RD 1; Mrs. Margaret Becker, Meyersdale RD 3; a step-daughter, Mrs. Margaret Decker, Garrett; a stepson, Herbert Hemmings, Meyersdale RD 1; also 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a half-brother, Edward Sutton, Garrett RD 1. He was a coal miner for 35 years and owner and operator of a grocery store for 35 years. Funeral service was held Saturday afternoon in William R. Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, with Rev. Ernest Rumbaugh officiating. Interment in St. Paul Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, May 30, 1974. [G0988]
