GRIEST Mrs. Griest Dies at Age of 90 Years One of Berlin's Oldest Residents Passes Away at Daughter's Home Mrs. Georgianna K. Griest, 90, one of Berlin's oldest and most respected citizens, died at 10:15 Wednesday night, Nov. 12, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lulu G. Dively, 806 East Main Street, Berlin, after a lingering illness which confined her to bed for more than six months. Always active in civic affairs, Mrs. Griest maintained an absorbing interest in local and world affairs until the last. About seven years ago, Mrs. Griest suffered a fracture of her right hip in a fall at her home and was thereafter prevented from participating in her usual activities. Nevertheless, she remained faithful to her church and civic duties until ill health forced her to retire from those duties more than a year ago. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Berlin for more than 34 years and was active in the missionary society and many other church activities. She was personally responsible for the start of the "Cradle Roll", a children's organization in Trinity Church, about 34 years ago. Her husband, William Penn Griest, a Civil War veteran, died about 55 years ago, leaving her with three children, of whom two survive. They are: Mrs. Lulu G. Dively of Berlin, with whom she had made her home for the past 35 years, and William Penn Griest of Barnesboro, Cambria County. Another son, Charles Elwood, died in 1906. She was the last surviving member of a large family, the children of Jonathan P. and Sydney S. (Knepper) Doyle. She was born July 14, 1851, in Doyle's Mill, Juniata County. As there were no public schools, Mrs. Griest was educated in The Seminary, a girl's school, near Doyle's Mills. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Mrs. Ruth Kaufman of Flat Rock, Mich.; Mrs. Janet Morgan of Bluefield, West Virginia; Penn G. Dively of Somerset; William Penn Griest III of Barnesboro and Mrs. Jane Brown of New York. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren. An ardent supporter of woman suffrage, Mrs. Griest voted in every primary and general election from the time women were given the vote until ill health forced her to remain at home on election day. She was a Republican by political belief and remained a strong Republican supporter until her death. Meyersdale Republican, November 20, 1941
