Groff, 79, died Saturday, June 18, in the Price Hospital, Confluence, where he had been a patient only a short time. He had not been in good health for the past year. He was born at Berkley's Mills, Somerset County, March 22, 1870, the son of the late G. G. and Ellen Groff of Confluence. In his early life he was a telegrapher for the B. and O. Railroad, at Bradford, where in 1895 he married Jennie L. Wingenroth. The couple then moved to Confluence and lived for the past 53 years on a farm on the Confluence-Ursina road. Mr. Groff was a member of the Lutheran Church and served on the church council for 22 years; he was a member of the Lower Turkeyfoot Township school board and township board of supervisors for 35 years, and was a chapter member of the Knights of Pythias of Confluence. He is survived by his wife, Jennie Wingenroth Groff and ten children: H. Warren and Lawrence Groff of Erie; Mrs. Dewey Rush, Clifford E., Paul E. and C. Luther, Jr., all of Clairton; Mrs. John McClain of Connellsville; Charles D., Somerset; William W., Confluence, and George L., at home. Also surviving are two brothers, A. T. Groff and A. F. Groff of Confluence, and 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon in the Humbert Funeral Home, the Rev. Jerome V. Guss officiating. Burial was made in Somerset County Memorial Park. Meyersdale Republican, June 30, 1949
