Born Nov. 22, 1902, in Berlin, son of John and Lucy (Ream) Groff. Preceded in death by parents, his wife, the former Euclid Ruth Bender, two infant sisters, and a brother, Clyde. Survived by son, Ralph M., married to the former Ruth Flick, New Carrollton, Md., daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Audrey) Harkcom, Berlin; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren. Brother of John, West Palm Beach, Fla. Former owner of Groff's Department Store, Berlin. Former Berlin mayor, councilman and water commissioner. Member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Berlin. 73-year-member of the Berlin Fire Department. Member of the Meyersdale Lodge 554 F. and A.M. Somerset County Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, and Jaffa Temple Shrine. He served with the U.S. Navy after World War I. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, with Rev. Melvin A. Kirk Jr. officiating. Interment, Berlin I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Fire department memorial service at 7 p.m. Saturday, masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Daily American, February 3, 1990 [G1090]
