She was born June 21, 1928, in West York, the daughter of the Rev. Walter D. and Naomi Grace (Slifer) Guess. She is survived by brother William Guss, three nieces and one nephew. Graduated from Somerset High School in 1945 and from Gettysburg College with an A.B. in 1949. Dr. Guss earned the M.A. and Ph.D. in Classics at the University of Pittsburgh and later an M.S. in Library and Information Science from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was awarded other diplomas after study in Greece, Italy and Germany. She was a professor of Classics at Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn., and at Juniata College, Huntingdon, and went overseas to teach as a missionary at Birzeit University on the West Bank in Palestine. After returning to the United States, she served on the staff of the Board of World Missions and Ecumenism of the Lutheran Church in America in New York City and later was librarian and tutor at Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y. Dr. Guss lived in McSherrystown; Chester, Somerset and Westmoreland counties; Maryville, Tenn.; Huntingdon, Jerusalem and New York City. Upon retirement, Dr. Guess lived in the Lutheran Retirement Village in Gettysburg, where she served as president of the Residential Living Council, and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Gettysburg. She traveled in six continents, 38 countries and all 50 states. Dr. Guss enjoyed classical music, reading, baseball, classical languages, history, theology, travel and her cat Oedipus. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Seminary Ridge, at 10 a.m. June 21. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to Lutheran Social Services of South Central Pennsylvania for the benefit of the Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Village. 06/15/2004 Daily American
