Born Aug. 21, 1923 in Greenridge, Md., the son of the late Myrtle (Grapes) and Walter Lupton Haines. Also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Debra, and two brothers. Survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan Elizabeth (McKenzie) Haines, whom he married Dec. 24, 1945; children, Walter D. and wife Carol Smith, Glencoe; Christopher and wife Priscilla (Foor), Somerset; Joan Mothersbaugh and husband William, Glencoe; and Joyce Shindledecker and husband Ronald, Glencoe; grandchildren, Jeff, Michele, Michael, Kayla, Hanna and Kayla; brothers, John and wife Helen, Flintstone, Md., William, Frederick, Md., and sister, Mary I. Decker, Florida. Retired from Kelly-Springfield with 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. An avid bowler, hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Kennells Mills Sportsman's Club. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown, Md., with Father William Moody officiating. Interment, St. Ambrose Cemetery. Military honors will be conferred graveside by the Combined Veterans of Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to Mr. Haines' widow.
