  Ruth E. Hamer, 89, of Somerset, formerly of Friedens, died Sept. 7, 2002 at
  Somerset Hospital.  Born July 9, 1913 in Listie, she is the daughter of
  Scott and Edith (Shaffer) Shaffer.  Preceded in death by her parents;
  husband M. M. Hamer; brothers Harold and Richard Shaffer; and sisters Helen
  Walker, Evelyn Lambert and Mildred Shaffer.  Survived by children, James E.,
  Mechanicsburg, Barbara, married to Robert DeFosses, Gainesville, Fla.;
  grandchildren Pamela D. Metzger, Timothy J. Hamer, Jill E. Tallman and
  Trudy E. Hamer; four step great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eileen Knupp,
  Somerset.  She was a homemaker.  Member of Friedens Lutheran Church and its
  Ladies Auxiliary.  Graduate of the former Somerset Twp. High School, Class
  of 1931, and she enjoyed crafts, bowling and reading.  Family will receive
  friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Friedens Lutheran Church, where a
  funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday.  The Rev. Edward V. DeVore
  officiating.  Interment, Pleasant Hill Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may
  be sent to Friedens Lutheran Church, 131 S. Main St., Friedens, Pa.,
  15541.  Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown, in charge of arrangements.
