She was born in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Ira R. (Mildred Scott) Harkins. She is survived by sisters, Janet, wife of James Ferner of Tiffin, Ohio, Mrs. Lois Paden of Danville, and a brother, David P. Harkins of St. Louis, Mo. Her joy of life and fierce independence will be greatly missed by numerous nieces and nephews who could always count on her love, care, and support of their various activities and her attendance at all significant family events. Ms. Harkins was a graduate of Ridgeway High School, Ridgeway and West Penn School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. Additionally, she attended Indiana University and the University of Michigan, earning her BSN and Masters in Nursing, respectively. She also attended the Pacific School of Religion in Berkley, Calif., the Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Conn. and the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Dee's career in nursing spanned more than four decades and two continents, affecting the lives of many people along the way. She served 10 years as a nurse in the mission field in Ghana, Africa. During those years she was instrumental in implementing a self-sustaining school of nursing in Worawora, Ghana. Her nursing career in the U.S. was largely teaching-oriented. She was a member of the teaching staff at Bryn Mawr School of Nursing in Philadelphia, the Nursing Program at Maysville Community College in Maysville, Ky. and most recently, at the Medical College of Ohio School of Nursing. Dee's instructional expertise included courses in clinical practices, obstetrics, geriatric care and ethics, earning the respect and admiration of both co-workers and students. This is best illustrated by multiple awards bestowed upon her by faculty, staff and student groups. Ms. Harkins was an active member of Sylvania United Church of Christ, Sylvania, Ohio and was deeply involved in many church-related activities including bell choir, book studies, Habitat for Humanity and speaking engagements about the mission field. The family will greet friends and former co-workers at 10 a.m. for fellowship and visitation and a Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. on March 13 at the Sylvania United Church of Christ, Sylvania, Ohio. The Celebration will be officiated by her pastor, the Rev. Bill Chidester, assisted by her niece, the Rev. Jill Harkins Goodman. The Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N.
