HARRIS A Somerset high school teacher died unexpectedly Sunday at the Somerset Community Hospital. John M. Harris, who had taught in the Somerset School District for the past 24 years, died of an apparent heart attack. He was 45. Mr. Harris was instrumental in starting the German language program at the school about 15 years ago and had taught the subject since it was instituted. Prior to that, he was a social studies instructor. He recently received an M.A. degree from the University of West Virginia and was a graduate of Waynesburg College and Salisbury-Elk Lick High School. Mr. Harris was the grand prize winner of the 175th Anniversary Essay Contest sponsored by the Daily American in August in commemoration of the 175th Anniversary of Somerset Borough. He is survived by his wife, the former Jennie Fredley, and three children, Eric, Theodore Vincent and Amy Lynn, all at home. Daily American, January 7, 1980 [H0345] JOHN M. HARRIS John M. Harris, 45, of Somerset, died Jan. 6, 1980 in Somerset Community Hospital. He was born Feb. 16, 1934 in Salisbury, son of Mary E. (Bodes) Harris of Salisbury RD 1, and the late Fay Harris. He is survived by his wife, the former Jennie Fredley, and these children, all at home: Eric, Theodore Vincent, and Amy Lynn; and these brothers and sisters: William B. of Salisbury; Mrs. John E. (Dorothy) Miller, Salisbury; Mrs. Mark (Ruth) James, Salisbury; Mrs. John (Alice Mae) O'Donnel, Salisbury; and Mrs. James M. (Mary Jane) Brown, Richmond, Va. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. He was a German teacher at Somerset Area Junior and Senior High Schools. A graduate of Salisbury-Elk Lick High Schools, and Waynesburg College, and a recent recipient of an M.A. degree from the University of West Virginia. He taught in the area schools for the last 24 years. Friends were received at the Richard E. Hauger Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, the Rev. Richard Shellenberger officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John Harris Children Educational Fund.
