Hay, M.D., 80, of Somerset, died Nov. 29, 2001 at Somerset Hospital. Born April 25, 1921 in Ferndale, the son of the late Dr. Homer W. and Ella (McVicker) Hay. Also preceded in death by first wife, Marilyn Hay, and brothers Homer McVicker Hay and twin brother Donald Arthur Hay. Survived by wife, the former Betty Mae Smith, to whom he was married 36 years; children: Jeffrey Hay, married to former Mary Ann Barnett of Los Alamos, N.M., Amy R. Hay, wife of Hon. Lester G. Nauhaus of Pittsburgh, Christopher S. Hay, married to former Paula Swain of Somerset and Tina Hay of State College; stepchildren: Joyce Mayer, Janet Higgins, Robert Mayer, married to former Beth Urbain, Patricia "Tish" Cascio, wife of James Cascio, all of Somerset and Gretchen Mayer of Hyannis, Mass.; grandchildren: David Hay and wife Rebecca, Michael and Hunter Hay; step-grandchildren: Jon and Sara Nauhaus, Jamie Higgins, James Mayer, Kelly Ann Mayer, Michael James Cascio, Scott Mayer, Jon Brant and Mia Cascio. Member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Somerset Lodge 358 F&AM, Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Society, American Academy of Family Practice and Pennsylvania Academy of Family Practice. The Pennsylvania Academy of Family Practice named him Pennsylvania Family Practitioner of the year in 1990. He served as medical staff president at Somerset Hospital from 1956-62 and 1972-74 and served on the hospital board of directors from 1971-2000. He retired from Somerset Hospital medical staff in December of 2000, after 50 years of service and was named Physician Emmeritus (sic). He was a graduate of Somerset High School in 1938 and from Franklin & Marshall College in 1942. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1945. He served in the Army Specialized Training Program and the Army Medical Service at Valley Forge Hospital, eventually reaching the rank of Captain. He started the group "Doc Hay & the Boys," who played for charities and their enjoyment. He also was past president of Somerset American Legion. There will not be any viewing or visitation. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the St. Paul's United Church of Christ with Rev. Glenn E. Saddler officiating. Interment in Grandview Cemetery.
