Heffley, father of two sons in the armed forces of the United States, and genial and much respected citizen of Meyersdale, passed away at his home at 411 North Street, early last Saturday morning after eight years' illness, resulting from an accident while employed as a clerk and meat-cutter in the Donges Market at Center and North Streets, now known as the Quality Market. Mr. Heffley was born in Meyersdale, June 24, 1880, and lived his entire life in this borough. During his younger years, he was an efficient and popular hotel employe, but changed his vocation when E. L. Donges established the meat and grocery store at Center and North Streets, and employed him as his chief assistant. He was in high favor with the patrons of the store and his employer. All went well with him in his work until one day about eight years ago, when no other employe was present to help him, he attempted to lift a heavy slab of beef off a hook in the refrigerator by himself. By getting his shoulder under it, he managed to heave it off the hook but it was heavier than he had calculated and he fell heavily on the floor under its weight. Although he suffered much pain and was lamed by the accident, he continued at work for some time afterward. His injury proved more serious and was of a more permanent nature than he was at first willing to admit. Instead of recovering his strength and agility by letting nature take its course, his health began to decline, and he never was a well man again. He finally had to give up his work, and live in retirement. A few years ago he became partially paralyzed, and thereafter found it difficult to converse with his family and friends. However he was able to be up and take short walks occasionally. He walked down town to buy some razor blades as late as Tuesday of last week. That was his last appearance outside of his home. Last Thursday he had a more severe stroke of paralysis than any he had before. Although he remained apparently conscious after this final stroke, all efforts to restore his physical powers failed, and he grew weaker and weaker unti he passed peacefully away on Saturday morning. Mr. Heffley did not belong to any church organization, but he lived by the Golden Rule, doing good to others when he could. He had a kind and generous nature, was a sterling citizen and was a good and kind and loving husband and father and good neighbor. He is survived by his faithful wife, Mrs. Loretty Heffley, three sons and two daughters, namely: Clare Heffley of Altoona; Frank Heffley, Jr., in the U.S. Navy, stationed at San Francisco, Cal., when last heard from; Donald, in the U.S. Army, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean; Mrs. William H. Black, of Somerset, and Jennie, at home. He is also survived by one brother, Harry Heffley, of Pittsburgh, and three grandchildren, two children of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Black, and one son of Claire Heffley. Funeral services at 2:30, Tuesday afternoon, were conducted by Rev. Kenneth Ashman, pastor of the Main Street Brethren Church, followed by interment in Union Cemetery. The funeral and burial arrangements were in charge of R. Reich & Son.
