Heist, 71, of Trout Farm Drive, Somerset, died Jan. 21, 1997, in Aspinwall Veterans Hospital. He was born March 16, 1925, in Spangler, son of the late Ruben and Martha (Hoffman) Heist. Preceded in death by his wife, Jean, in 1992, and a sister, Helen Smoker. Survived by the following children: Mrs. John (P.J.) O'Neill of Monroeville; Mrs. Dave (Joey) Beckner of Duck Pond Road, and grandchildren: Bruce and Grace O'Neill, Erin and Jake Beckner, and a foster granddaughter, Carla Ingelido of Monroeville. Brother of Mrs. Mildred DeHaven of Scottdale, Chuck Heist of Listie, Sam Heist of Ambridge, John and Clark Heist, both of Somerset, and Dick Heist of Alexandria, Va. He was a World War II veteran of U.S. Army. Member of Somerset American Legion, Somerset VFW, Elks Club of Meyersdale, Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Association. He was a disabled war veteran. Charter member of Kiwanis Club, where he served as president and lieutenant governor. Life member of Somerset Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as president, member of the board of directors and assistant chief. A certified State Fire School instructor. Walter and his wife, Jean, owned and operated the former Joe's Restaurant in Somerset. Former Somerset County commissioner. Served as deputy coroner for a number of years. Member of Travelers Detective Association, Somerset Church of the Brethren, National Rifle Association and Maple Sugar Producer's Association. For many years, he was trustee of the Bakersville Community Grove. He received the Life is a Cycle award from the Somerset Grange in 1977. He was a member of the Golden Singles of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Wilbur D. Miller Funeral Home, Somerset, where funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, the Rev. Roger Forry and the Rev. Richard Yates officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park.
