HERSHBERGER Milton E. Hershberger, one of Elk Lick Township's best known and most beloved citizens, passed away in the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md., about 10:30 o'clock last Sunday morning, at the age of 59 years, 8 months and 18 days. Mr. Hershberger had been suffering from a weak heart, hardening of the arteries and mastoid trouble for the last year. His condition became very serious last week and on Thursday he was taken to the hospital for an operation. His condition was such, however, that an operation was not deemed advisable, and he gradually declined until the end came on Sunday morning. The funeral was held at the Amish Mennonite Church near Grantsville, Md., Tuesday afternoon, and was largely attended, the services being conducted by Ministers Jonas B. Miller and Noah Brenneman. Milton E. Hershberger was a son of the late Elias Hershberger and was born and reared on his father's farm in Elk Lick Township, near Niverton, and spent his entire life in the community in which he had his birth. He was naturally very bright mentally and secured a very good education, although, he attended only the elementary schools of his township. As boy and man no one ever had a gentler nor more genial disposition nor better reputation for rectitude and loving kindness. These sterling qualities endeared him to the entire community with a warmth of affection accorded few men of any age or generation. As he harbored no unkind thoughts nor said unkind words about any one, so no one could think nor speak ill of him. It is doubtful whether any citizen of Elk Lick Township ever was held in higher esteem by his neighbors or was more sincerely mourned when called away. Mr. Hershberger was a faithful member of the Amish Mennonite Church and took an active interest in all good works of his church and community. He married Miss Kate Beachy of Aurora, W.Va., a sister of Mrs. S. S. Miller of Elk Lick Township. They were married ten years before a son, Donald, their only child, came to bless them. Donald is now 18 years. Mr. Hershberger is survived, besides his wife and son, by two brothers, Joel E. and Harvey E. Hershberger, well known farmers on Meyersdale Rural Route No. 2, and three sisters, Ida, wife of Christian W. Bender, living in the old home farm, near Niverton; Cora, wife of Christian J. Bender, and Miss Ida Hershberger, both of Los Angeles, Cal. His two eldest sisters, Mrs. Annie Shetler, and Sarah, Mrs. Jonas D. Yoder, are deceased. After his marriage Mr. Hershberger established his home on a portion of his father's farm, where he lived happily until called hence. Meyersdale Republican, January 16, 1930
