John Henry Hertzog was born in Garrett, May 4, 1875, and died September 5, 1946, aged 71 years, 4 months and 1 day. Death was attributed to a heart attack. While he had been in ill health for some time he was still able to visit with his friends, and death occurred while he was talking with a friend, Edward Walters, about going on a fishing trip. "Boney" is remembered by the Old Timers as the famous speed pitcher of the Garrett base ball nine. His wife, Alice Wetmiller Hertzog, died in 1915. He was a member of the Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church. He is survived by the following children: Harry; Pearl Hertzog Sunderline, Carrie Hertzog Saylor, Chrissie Hertzog Ackerman, Zella Hertzog Wigley, all of Akron, Ohio; James, of Ebensburg, and Nina Hertzog Weaver, of Greensburg. Two daughters, Jennie and Annie, died in infancy. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Clarence Saylor of Akron, Ohio. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Lutheran Church with his pastor, Rev. John S. Hoenstine, officiating. Interment in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Berlin, under the direction of W. C. Price & Son, Meyersdale. Pallbearers were Ross Pritts, Guy A. Cook, Sr., Harry Swarner, Harry Neil, Wilson Walters, J. Edgar Brant. Out of town people attending the funeral services were Mrs. Clarence Saylor and son Charles, Mr. and Mrs. Murray Saylor and son, Murray, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Vance Wood of Akron, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Zimmerman of Homer city, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Zimmerman and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cook of Greensburg.
