Born June 7, 1914, in Meyersdale, he was a son of the late Henry James and Velda D. (Eversole) Herwig. He was a retired engineer for the state Department of Environmental Resources; a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; a member of the American Legion Post 112, Meyersdale; the West Shore Elks Club; and was a banjoist with the Mickey J. Band and the Polka Knights. Mr. Herwig is survived by his wife, the former Kathleen Ralston; one son, Edward, of Linglestown, Pa.; a daughter, Eileen Westenheffer, Hanover, Pa.; a sister, M. Kathleen Dahl, Daytona Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Neill Funeral Home, Camp Hill. Interment with military honors was held in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
