He was the son of the late Wilson C. and Annie Miller Hicks, former well known residents of Meyersdale. Wilson C. Hicks was appointed postmaster of Meyersdale upon the death of the first postmaster of Meyers Mills, Peter Meyers, in 1870. The name of the postoffice still was Meyers Mills when Mr. Hicks took it over and was not changed until after the incorporation of the town as a borough in 1874, when the name was changed to Meyersdale. Wilson C. Hicks, therefore, was the first postmaster of Meyersdale and served under Presidents Grant, Hayes, Garfield and Arthur, but died before the completion of his last term. His son, Frank Hicks, grew up in Meyersdale, and when still in his "teens" became a bookkeeper in the Philson Bank, now the Citizens National Bank. When still quite a young man, Frank Hicks removed to Connellsville where he was successfully engaged in the lumber business for many years. Mr. Hicks was not only a good businessman, but had an even-tempered and kindly disposition which made for him many friends. He was for many years an active member of the Connellsville Baptist Church. After Connellsville was so hard hit by the great business depression of the 1930's, which left many lines of business prostrate, Mr. Hicks moved to Pittsburgh, where he and his sons operated two automobile service stations until his death. He was in failing health during the last two years of his life. He left to mourn his loss a loving wife, Mrs. Ida Hicks, now residing at Mill Run, Pa.; a son, Francis Wilson Hicks, of Pittsburgh, and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Groves and Mrs. Grace Phillips, both residing in Pittsburgh.
