John Roland 02/14/05 Daily American The Rev. John Roland Hickson, 89, Addison, went to be with our Lord, Feb. 11, 2005, from Henry Clay Villa, Markleysburg, after a long illness. He was born Feb. 5, 1916, in Easton, Md., a son of Charles B. and Laura Agnes Hickson. Preceded in death by parents; first wife, Blanche Keller Hickson; two brothers and two sisters. Survived by his wife of 34 years, Mildred "Patty" Wilburn Hickson; son, Jay Hickson and his wife, Diana, Atlanta, Ga.; daughters, Bonnie Wilson and her husband, Terry, Dallas, Texas, Eileen Mehnert and her husband, Bob, Friendswood, Texas and Joan Jefferson and her husband, David, Broadkill Beach, Del.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Catherine Schwaninger, Trappe, Md.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Rev. Hickson served 43 years in the ministry. He retired from the Peninsula Delaware Conference of the United Methodist Church, Dover District, White's Chapel Charge, Lewes, Del., in 1981. Previously he was a member of the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, Connellsville District and served the Addison Charge for 17 years. He completed studies at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C. and was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist church. After retiring to Addison, he served various churches in the area including Mill Run, Md., Listonburg and Silbaugh until 1991. His ministry began in 1933, with the Church of God, where he served for many years in several states and local churches. Charter member of the Markleysburg Volunteer Fire Department and past president of the Confluence Lions Club. Former member of the board of the Children's Aid Society of Somerset County, the Mountain Team Ministry and Yough Housing Inc., of Confluence. He was employed by United States Steel's Clairton Works, American General Life Insurance Company, Nemacolin Mines and various other companies during his early career. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Humbert Funeral Home, Logan Place, Confluence. Friends will also be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, the hour of service, at the Addison United Methodist Church. The Rev. Timothy Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in Somerset County Memorial Park. Family suggests memorial contributions to a church or charity of the donor's choice
