Hillegas, 87, Wednesday, Apr. 24, Berlin has lost one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens. Mr. Hillegas, the son of Jacob B., and Esther (Burns) Hillegas, was born in Bedford County. He married Miss Mary Glessner, who preceded him in death in 1931. They owned a large farm in Stonycreek Twp. where they reared a family of outstanding sons and daughters, nine of whom survive - George A. Hillegas, Berlin R.D. 2; Mrs. John E. Landis, Shanksville; Mrs. Norman A. Lambert and Harry Hillegas, Stoystown R.D. 3; Mrs. Harry Fritz, Garrett R.D.; Pearl Hillegas, at home; Alvin Hillegas, Berlin R.D. 1; and Lester Hillegas, Johnstown. There are surviving also, 28 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Annie, Mrs. Irvin Taylor of New Paris, Bedford Co. About 20 years ago Mr. Hillegas retired from farming and moved to Diamond St., Berlin, where he and his daughter Pearl, a teacher in the Berlin schools, resided. He was greatly interested in the civic and religious life of the community, being elder emeritus of the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Berlin. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at his late residence, Rev. Herman Snyder officiating. Interment in I.O.O.F. Cemetery under direction of Johnson & Son.
