After a two-year battle with osteosarcoma, his soul was victorious in claiming a new life with Jesus Christ; his spirit never surrendered. He was born Nov. 24, 1990, in Somerset, beloved son of Kirk and Tine (deVries) Hillegass. Alec is survived by his parents; sister, Juliana Hillegass, Ithaca, N.Y.; brother, Luther J. Hillegass, at home; paternal grandparents, Jay and Constance Hillegass, Somerset; maternal grandparents, Jan R.J. and Klasina deVries, Somerset; aunts and uncles, Jayne and Larry; Laura and Steve; Polly and Todd; Bert and Christine; Roelof and Leslie; and Peter and Becky; and many beloved cousins. Alec attended Shanksville-Stonycreek Schools. He was a member of Unity United Church of Christ, Milkshakers 4-H Club, and the Somerset County Junior Holstein Club. He was a successful showman of his dairy cattle, receiving many honors at various levels of competition. From an early age, Alec was very involved with the family dairy farm, where he took great pride in caring for his animals. Alec also enjoyed many years of participation in baseball and basketball with his friends at Shanksville. Alec's body may have succumbed to osteosarcoma, but his spirit succumbed to the good and perfect will of his Heavenly Father quite sometime ago. So many lives were touched as a result of his great courage, determination and faith. His spirit will live on forever and continue to make this world a better place to live. A private family service remembering Alec will be held at Unity United Church of Christ preceding interment at Glade Cemetery. The public is invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate Alec's life at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5 at the Shanksville-Stonycreek High School. The Rev. Jay Shaffer presiding. Because Alec was an intense sports fan, his family invites you to wear your favorite sports shirt in his honor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to In Touch Hospice, 223 S. Pleasant Ave., Somerset, PA 15501 or the MD Anderson Cancer Center (please specify Osteosarcoma Research) P.O.
