Hillegass, 62, well-known Berlin businessman and active church worker, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 25, at his home in Berlin following an illness of 11 weeks. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Hillegass home by Rev. John H. Bethune, pastor of Trinity Reformed Church. Interment in Berlin I.O.O.F. Cemetery, in charge of Johnson and Son, Berlin morticians. Mr. Hillegass was born near Berlin, a son of Luther J. and Mary (Glessner) Hillegass. He was a partner in the Berlin Feed Company for many years. He also served for a number of years as secretary of the Berlin-Brothersvalley Township School Board. He was a deacon of Trinity Reformed Church, and a member of the Berlin Lions Club, Berlin I.O.O.F. Lodge and the Knights of Malta. Surviving are his aged father, his wife, Mrs. Hattie (Stutzman) Hillegass, and a son, Jacob L. Hillegass of Lancaster. He was a brother of George Hillegass, Berlin R.D.; Harry Hillegass, Shanksville; Nevin Hillegass, Berlin R.D.; Alvin Hillegass, Ashland, O.; Lester Hillegass, Johnstown; Mrs. John Landis and Mrs. Norman Lambert, both of Shanksville; Mrs. Harry Fritz, Garrett; and Miss Pearl Hillegass, Berlin.
