She was a resident at Somerset Patriot Manor for the past eight years. Born July 30, 1905 in Milford Township to Arch F. and Bertha (Barclay) Walker, she was the eldest of six children, sisters Mary and Helen, and brothers, Clark, Robert and Dalton, all preceding her in death. Known to all as simply "Gammy," her love of family and farm will long be remembered by her descendants. Her passion for children and animals endeared her to all who arrived at her doorstep. Ruth spent her childhood at Milford Valley Farm, Rockwood, attending the one-room Weimer School and later, California Normal School where she graduated with a teaching certificate. In 1925, she traded her teaching career to become a farmer's wife when she married Nevin Stanley Hillegass, a loving union that endured 42 years. Her Stonycreek Township homestead, now known as Hillmont, is operated today by her son, Jay, and grandson, Kirk. Ruth was a life-long member of Unity United Church of Christ, the Fourth Society of Farm Women and Trinity Chapter 138 OES. Ruth was preceded in death by Nevin in 1968 and is survived by son Deane, married to Jean of Hendersonville, N.C., two grandchildren, Craig, and Terri, married to Timothy Keeney and five great-grandchildren, Joshua, Lindsey, Caroline, Kimberly and Emily; son Jay, married to Constance of Berlin, four grandchildren, Kirk, married to Tine, Jayne Huston, married to Larry Sedlemeyer, Laura, married to Stephen Pasky, and Paula, married to Todd Leipold and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Juliana, Tyler, Luther, Andrew, Alec, Harrison and Hillary; and a daughter Helen Ann, married to Ronald W. Knepper of Andover, Mass., four grandchildren, Timothy, married to Kathryn; Steven, married to Heidi; Karen, married to Matthew Bushey and Douglas and two great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Dylan. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Rev. Jay E. Shaffer officiating. Interment will follow in IOOF Cemetery, Berlin. Family request memorial gifts made to the Unity United Church of Christ Building Fund, P.O. Box 132, Shanksville, Pa. 15560.
