HOFFMAN Charles Joseph Hoffman, Elk Lick Township farmer, died at his home at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, of cancer. He had been ill for about five years. He was born in Germany on June 30, 1866, and was brought to America by his parents when he was only 15 months old. He resided near Accident, Md., until about 60 years ago, when he came to Salisbury to work and made his home in this community for the remainder of his life. His wife, who preceded him in death, on November 8, 1943, was a daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Baer) Meese. Mr. Hoffman was 78 years, 10 months and 10 days old at his death. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church. He is survived by three daughters, Mary, wife of Leo Derry, Meyersdale; Florence, wife of George Shultz, Pittsburgh; Freda, wife of Patrick Broderick, Berlin; two sons, Ernest and Charles E., of Salisbury, one sister, Elizabeth, wife of Frank Northcraft, Cumberland; and two brothers, John of Uniontown, and Martin H., of Morgantown, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted at his late home at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, with Rev. George E. Bowersox, Jr., officiating. Interment in the family plot in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Mortician Stanley M. Thomas in charge. Meyersdale Republican, May 17, 1945
