H. Hoke, Sr., Passed Away Suddenly Last Thursday Mrs. Alice (LaMar) Hoke, 68, wife of Dr. B. H. Hoke, died suddenly about 8:40 last Thursday evening at her home on Main Street. Death, due to a heart attack, came shortly after she had retired to her bed for the night. Although active and apparently in good health until the last, Mrs. Hoke's sudden departure was anticipated by her professional husband and immediate family. A severe heart attack in August 1937, from which she recovered, gave warning that her days on earth were numbered. Dr. Hoke's knowledge of similar cases of heart affliction caused him to be alert to the inevitable time when death would overtake his wife suddenly. Mrs. Hoke appeared in excellent health throughout the day, Thursday. She went about her daily tasks in the usual manner. She washed and hung curtains, and during the late afternoon played with her little granddaughter. Two hours before her death she stood on her front porch and waved goodby to the granddaughter and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Robert Hoke, as they left for their home in Salisbury. She retired to her bedroom at about 8 p.m. Dr. Hoke was in his office when he heard Mrs. Hoke cough. Alert to her heart condition, he immediately went to her room, and there found her dead. A book, which she had been reading, lay at her side, with the page turned down at the end of the second chapter. Mrs. Hoke, with her husband and family, came to Meyersdale soon after the end of the first world war. During her residence here she was exceptionally active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, and in church work and civic affairs in general. She took an active part in promoting the Legion Auxiliary's project to erect the soldiers and sailors monument now located in Market Square. At the time of her death she was a member of Amity Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Helping Hand Bible Class. She was a member of the church choir, in which she took great interest. Mrs. Hoke was active also in the local W.C.T.U. organization and the Garden Club and was a member of the Woman's Club. Mrs. Hoke was ambitious and energetic at all times. She took great pride in doing her own household chores, according to her own ideas. She was always busy re-arranging and re-decorating her home. Following her illness, four and one-half years ago, she made plans for the time when she would depart from the world, and left to her family a full list of instructions as to funeral arrangements, the clothes she wished to wear, place of burial, etc. Mrs. Hoke was a daughter of Robert G. and Katie (Sinn) LaMar, and was born in Frederick, Md., on December 16, 1873. Besides her husband, Mrs. Hoke is survived by one daughter and four sons as follows: Edward L. Hoke, Newport, O.; Miss Sarah Elizabeth Hoke, Washington, D.C.; Dr. Bradley H. Hoke, Jr., Salisbury, Pa.; Dr. Samuel Hoke, Meadville, Pa.; Robert L. Hoke, Salisbury, Pa. She is also survived by the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Clayton Cronise, Frederick, Md.; Mrs. Edward Moberly, Johnstown; Rev. Edward LaMar, Lancaster; and Robert G. LaMar, Baltimore, Md. Funeral services were conducted at 10 o'clock Saturday morning in the Amity Evangelical and Reformed Church by Rev. Nelson C. Brown, assisted by Rev. Harry A. Price of Pittsburgh and Dr. B. A. Black of Meyersdale. The remains lay in state at the church from 9 a.m. until after the funeral services. Interment was in a cemetery at Frederick, Md., under the direction of W. C. Price & Son, local morticians. Meyersdale Republican, January 29, 1942
