HORNING Aged Coal Miner Richard Horning Killed at Work Richard H. Horning, aged 75 years, was killed in a mine accident about 10:30 on Wednesday morning. He was found under a rock fall, having been crushed while at work in the mine owned by his son, George, and nephew, William Hornig, near Pine Hill. Mr. Horning was a hard-working coal miner most of his life. Relatives tried to persuade him to retire from work, owing to his advanced age, but he persisted in working as long as he felt able to do so and there was work to do. A native of Germany, he was born October 10, 1870, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Horning. Surviving are eight children: Edward R., Mrs. H. A. Pfeiffer, John W., James R., Clarence W., and Mrs. Mary E. Tattarelli, all of Meyersdale, and George L. Horning, of Berlin R.D., and Harry L., of Red Lion. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Horning home, 400 Beachley St., at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, with Rev. Nelson C. Brown, pastor of Amity Evangelical and Reformed Church, officiating. Interment will be made in Union Cemetery, under the direction of H. R. Konhaus, local mortician. Meyersdale Republican, March 21, 1946
