Born Sept. 24, 1924 in Somerset, he is the son of the late Robert P. and Grace (Pifer) Houpt. He is also preceded in death by his wife Estella (Dwire) Houpt, whom he married on July 23, 1965 in Cumberland, Md. and died Feb. 7, 2000, and a sister Gladys Buchholz. Survived by daughters, Linda Hall, Houston, Texas; Lana J. Smith, Somerset, and Elaine J. Bishop, Winchester, Va. Six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two sisters, Dorothy Brant and Sarah Jane Creery, both of Somerset. He was a supervisor with Somerset Foundry and co-owner of West Salisbury Foundry, retiring after 47 years. He was a member of the Mount Zion Methodist Church, the First Christian Church of Somerset and Somerset Eagles Aerie 1801. A veteran of World War II serving as a private in the US Army. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze stars. Friends received 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, the Pastor Elaine Boyer officiating. Interment, Husband Cemetery.
