"Barney" 06/06/05 Daily American George R. "Barney" Howard, 83, Somerset, died June 4, 2005, at Somerset Hospital. Born July 8, 1921, in Somerset Township, he was a lifelong resident of Somerset. He is preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Jenny (Weller) Howard, and brothers, Truman E. and Earl W. Howard. Survived by his wife, the former Betty Brant, to whom he was married 55 years; daughters, Mrs. Ervin B. (Linda J.) Myers, Mercer and Mrs. Kenneth (Mary Jane) Hayman, Berlin; sons, Richard G. and Charles R. Howard, both of Somerset; Harold J. Howard, Florence, Ky. and Robert M. Howard and wife, Wendy, Virginia Beach, Va.; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Brother of Paul Howard and Elsie Howard Weller, both of Somerset. George was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II with the 418th Bombardment Squadron, 100th Bombardment Group as a sergeant. While in the service, he earned the Distinguished Unit Badge with one Oak leaf Cluster and the Service Medal with six Bronze Stars. Member of the First United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of VFW Post 554, Somerset. He retired from the Somerset County Memorial Park, where he worked for over 51 years. George loved camping and hunting and spending time with family and neighbors. Friends received Sunday and will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home where service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Patricia M. Nelson officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park.
