Hughes, native of Somerset County, died at his home, 4919 Monroe Street, Hyattsville, Md., Sunday, Feb. 22, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Feb. 25. He was the son of William and Lana (Martz) Hughes of Glencoe, Pa. He served in the United States Army for 30 years, having served in World War I, the Mexican border conflict and in the Philippines. He retired from the Army in 1936 as a master sergeant. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife, Ethel; a son, First Lt. Irvin C. Hughes, Jr., U.S.A., Ft. Benning, Ga.; a daughter, Mrs. Louise Lombardy, Washington, D.C.; a sister, Clara Christner, Garrett; a brother, George C. Hughes, Hyndman, and a grandson, Michael F. Lombardy.
