Born July 16, 1920 in La Belle, Pa., a son of the late William and Mary Ann (Dornoch) Hughes. Survived by wife, the former Anna Kurtz; son, John Patrick Hughes of Herndon, Va.; daughters, Pamela Ann Hughes, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Kathy Ruck, Omaha, Neb.; 2 grandchildren, Sarah Lindsay and John David Hughes; 3 sisters: Margaret Freel, Orlando, Fla.; Mary Jane Newcomb, Warsaw, Ind., and Anna Jean Donaldson, Carmichaels, and Robert Hughes, St. Augustine, Fla. Preceded in death by brother, Jerry. Retired as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of service. A fighter pilot and veteran of World War II and Vietnam. Member of Confluence Volunteer Fire Department; board of directors of Turkeyfoot Area Medical Association; Trinity Lutheran Church, Confluence; Meyersdale Masonic Lodge 554, F. & A.M.; Pittsburgh Syria Shrine; Somerset American Legion. Former member of Confluence Lions Club. No visitation. Masonic services will be held at Humbert Funeral Home, Confluence, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorial service will be conducted from Trinity Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. Friday, with Rev. John Palko and Rev. William Triebe officiating. Interment, Addison Cemetery.
