She was born Oct. 2, 1942 in Waterbury, Conn. a daughter of the late George T. and Mary (Reitz) Evans. She is survived by her husband, William F. Hughes of Oquossoc; two step-sons: Christopher Hughes and his wife Pam of Raleigh, N.C., and Eric Hughes of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Elizabeth Goepel of Inman, S.C.; one niece, three nephews and several grand nieces and grand nephews. She attended Dana Hall School, Wellesley College, and the University of Pittsburgh where she received a MSW degree. She began her career as a social worker at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and in 1984 became the director of the Social Work Department. As a strong advocate for children, her main interest was in child abuse and neglect - a field in which she was actively engaged in research. She was the author or co-author of several publications and books and was one of the first workers to identify the "Failure to Thrive" Syndrome. She was active as a board member in several local, state, and national organizations including the "Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Institute," the state licensure board and the "Pittsburgh Parental Stress Center," of which she was one of the founders. Upon her retirement in 1993 from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, she and her husband Bill moved to their farm near Meadville, Pa., where she was an active volunteer in the Crawford County "children and youth" social service programs. In 1995 they moved to the Rangeley, Maine area and made their camp on Mooselookmeguntic their permanent home. In Rangeley Sue was active in several organizations. She was at times a board member of the Rangeley Region Health Center, the M.I.A., the Rangeley Round Table, and the Rangeley Public Library. She served as president of the library board from 1998 until 2002. As president she was instrumental in initiating the new library expansion project. She was a lover of music, especially opera. While in Pittsburgh, she sang in the Heinz Chapel Choir of the University of Pittsburgh and in several other choral groups. She loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to London with her husband. Mrs. Hughes enjoyed the outdoors - walking, skiing, swimming, and especially the lakes and scenery of the Rangeley region. A memorial service in Rangeley will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Western Mountains Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, Maine. Should friends so desire, contributions may be made in Mrs. Hughes' memory to the Rangeley Public Library, Sue E. Hughes Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 381, Rangeley, Maine 04970.
