Hummel, well known grocery merchant of Meyersdale, for Mrs. Hummel had a wide circle of friends and relatives among whom she served with quiet devotion as she did also in the various organizations to which she belonged. She passed away at 3:05 Saturday morning, April 5, 1941, in the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, where she underwent an operation for gall stones on March 26. Although her condition was serious from the beginning, she did show improvement on Wednesday and Thursday of last week, but early Friday there was a turn for the worse, and nothing that could be done by the best of doctors or nurses could save her life. Mrs. Hummel was born in Germany February 16, 1878, coming to America when three years of age with her parents, William and Anna (Struider) Keidel, who took up their residence in this community. She is survived by her husband, James B. Hummel, and one sister, Mrs. Glenn Crowe. Her body rested in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Crowe on Olinger Street, which was originally the Keidel home in which she spent her girlhood, from Saturday evening until Tuesday afternoon when it was taken to the Amity Reformed Church where funeral services were conducted. On Monday evening the American Legion Auxiliary, of which she was a member, went in a body to the home to pay last respects to a valued member. A short service was conducted by the Auxiliary, at the close of which each member laid a small bouquet beside her making a fringe of flowers at the edge of her coffin. On Tuesday afternoon short services were read by her pastor, Rev. Nelson C. Brown, at the home for the family and intimate friends and relatives before proceeding to the church at 2:30, where a host of friends were waiting. The church was filled to capacity for the last rites which were conducted by Rev. Brown and Dr. B. A. Black, former pastor of the church. Members of Amity Church Missionary Society, of which she was an active and devoted member, serving many years as an officer and to her death as treasurer, were honorary pallbearers. Six members of the American Legion of which her husband is an active member, served as pallbearers. She was a member of the Eastern Star and of the Meyersdale Garden Club, which organizations were also represented at her funeral. There were very many beautiful floral tributes. Interment was made in Union Cemetery under the direction of W. C. Price and son, morticians. Among those most grieved by her loss are her nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Crowe, and her niece, Elizabeth Crowe Werner and her husband, Paul Werner, all of whom have had business opportunities made for them by their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Hummel, in the merchantile firms known as the Meyersdale Unit Store and Community Market.
