Ickes, one of Meyersdale's best known citizens, died late Friday night at the family residence, 326 North Street, following an illness of several months. Mr. Ickes was born September 10th, 1868, at Cessna, Bedford County, and had been a resident of Meyersdale for more than half a century. During the major portion of his residence here he conducted a flourishing livery business on Dale Street, but with the advent of the automobile his attention was directed more particularly to the buying and sale of livestock, besides engaging in trucking and draying, the cultivation of lots and like pursuits. His large sales barn was the scene of many horse sales by agents who specialized in western stock. Surviving are his wife, Nettie F. (Imler) Ickes, and these children: Ross and Bruce Ickes, Altoona; Paul and Clark Ickes, Johnstown; Mrs. Beatrice Stein, Boynton; Raymond and Frederick Ickes, Baltimore, Md.; Ralph, Anna and Homer Ickes, Meyersdale. He also leaves two brothers, William and Charles Ickes; and a sister, Mrs. Millie Mervine, all of Bedford. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Ickes residence, North Street, by the Rev. H. K. Hilner, pastor of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, of which the deceased was a member. He also held a life membership in the Bedford Knights of Pythias. Interment was made in Union Cemetery under the direction of R. Reich & Son, local morticians. Meyersdale Republican, May 15, 1941
