He was born May 19, 1928, in Meyersdale, the son of the late Beatrice Elizabeth (Ickes) Stein. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Hoffman) Ickes. He is survived by a daughter, Kathy J. Hughes, Ellerslie, MD; a half brother, George H. Stein, III, Washington, PA; three grandchildren: Joshua Hughes and wife, Ellen; Marci Dare and husband, Don and Jennessa Hughes; two great grandchildren: Braxton Hughes and Addisyn Hughes; a nephew, Herb Stein and a niece, Kelli Stein. Mr. Ickes worked for Kelly Springfield Tire Co. and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Salisbury American Legion and Meyersdale Lodge #554 F.&A.M.. He enjoyed coopering, woodworking and reading Westerns. A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating.
