Garrett County, Maryland Boy Drowned in New Germany Dam Fell Into Pool While Walking Along Shore with Mother and Sisters Eugene Harold Irasek, Jr., seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Irasek, of Bethesda, Md., was drowned Tuesday morning in the dam in the New Germany recreational area. He fell into the water while walking along the shore with his mother and two sisters younger than he. The family had been camping at the area less than two days. M. E. Martin and his 16 year old son, William, who were working only a few hundred feet away, heard the cry for help and rushed to the scene where young Martin, after diving the third time, recovered the body which was submerged near the breast of the dam. Mrs. John McCormick, Baltimore City nurse, Hugo Keller, of the Celeanese Corporation, and Trooper G. S. Dunlap, also campers in the area, hurried to the scene and soon began to apply artifical respiration. They were later assisted by Alvin J. Yoder, representative of the Grantsville Fire Department, who had been called. A little more than an hour later a resusitator was obtained from Cumberland, and used until the oxygen ran out an hour and a half later, when Dr. N. R. Davis, local physician, pronounced the lad dead. The campers, however, continued to work on the body for almost two hours. Dr. Irving E. Baumgartner, county medical examiner, was notified of the drowning and preceeded to the scene, but upon his arrival, deemed an inquest unnecessary. Meyersdale Republican, July 30, 1942
