Born April 29, 1925 in Johnstown, a son of Dr. Jerry M. and Margaret (Veil) James. Preceded in death by parents and wife, the former Dorothy Jean Reis, who died June 1, 1995. Survived by children, Jerry Melvin James of Somerset, Mary Veil, wife of Christopher Schiffhauer of Indian Lake and Alan Reis James and friend Lisa Marie St. Clair of Berlin. A 1943 graduate of Hooversville High School. Attended Mercersvurg Academy. A staff sergeant in the U.S. Army in the World War II Italian campaign with the 85th Infantry Division, 337th Infantry Regiment and had receieved the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf cluster and three Battle Stars. Also a staff sergeant during the Korean Conflict with ASA Engineering Company. Member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Life member of VFW Post 155 and life member of American Legion Post 181. Member of Lodge No. 358 F&AM, Altoona Consistory. Member of senior gold leagues at both Kinds Mountain and Piney Run Golf courses. Member of Roof Garden Lodge 98, Fraternal Order of Police, Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees, retired registed Sanitarian from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources with 32 years of service. No viewing or visitation. Friends received from 10 a.m. to time of service at 11 a.m., Monday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Susan H. Yatta officiating.
