JAMES Tragic Death of Retired Citizen William A. James Without Any Apparent Cause Ended His Life With His Own Hand William Albert James, retired miner, died Tuesday morning, May 30, about 11 o'clock shortly after he severed his jugular vein with a penknife in the bathroom of his home, 617 Beachley Street, Meyersdale. P. C. Dosch, Somerset, Pa., Somerset County coroner, issued a verdict of suicide and deemed an inquest unnecessary. Police Chief John Bittner, Meyersdale, and Wm. P. Diveley, Somerset County detective, assisted in the investigation. Mr. James was of a kindly, genial disposition, and was held in high esteem, and it is difficult to ferret out the cause that prompted the act. Less than an hour before he died one of his neighbors was conversing with him and he was said to have been in the best of spirits. He was looking over his garden and did not seem to have a care in the world. Mr. James was born June 8, 1872, in Fulton County, Pa., the son of John W. and Rebecca (Richie) James. He was a resident of Meyersdale for many years and until his retirement some time ago was engaged in mining. He was twice married. His first wife, Mrs. Amanda (Gray) James, and a daughter, preceded him in death. Surviving are his second wife, Mrs. Ida James and these children by his former marriage: Mrs. Maay Reines, Toledo, Ohio; Mrs. Florence Lumadue, Elyria, Ohio; Mrs. Walter Garlitz, Altoona; Robert D. and Melvin C., both of Meyersdale; a half-brother, Matthew Hicks, Pinkerton; thirteen grandchildren and one great- grandchild. Funeral services will be held at the James home Friday at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. DeWitt Miller, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, officiating. Burial will be made in the Union Cemetery, Meyersdale.
