Johnston, wife of Robert H. Johnston, died at her home at about 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5th, of heart disease. She had been failing in health for a number of years and had been bedfast with continuing heart attacks for more than two months, and although she was not expected to live early in December, she was able to withstand the attacks until last Tuesday. She was born in Salisbury on May 6, 1873, daughter of William and Caroline (Dively) Smith and was aged 72 years and 9 months at her death. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth, now attending the University of Pittsburgh, and Louise, wife of H. G. Bender of Meyersdale, and one son, Robert S. Johnston of Cleveland, and two grandchildren. She was the last survivor of a fine family of nine children. Mrs. Johnston was a lady of sterling character always pleasant and sociable, and was very well liked by all who knew her. She was a member of the Evangelical Church until her marriage in that church on November 9, 1899. Then she joined the Lutheran Church to which her husband belonged, and remained a faithful member of that denomination to the end. She belonged to the Priscilla Club, and to the Missionary Society of St. John's Lutheran Church. Funeral services were conducted at her home at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 7th, with her pastor, Rev. George E. Bowersox, Jr., officiating. The pallbearers were Bayard S. Maust and D. H. Broadwater of the Lions Club, Frank F. Petry and William C. Reckner of the Odd Fellows, and Jonas S. Lichty and Wilbert R. Wagner of the Lutheran Church Council. Interment in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in charge of Mortician Stanley M. Thomas. Meyersdale Republican, February 7, 1946
