She was a retired professor of English literature who had taught at California State Teachers' College and at Waynesburg College, as well as at Pierce College in Greece, while on a Fulbright Scholarship. Early in her career, she also taught in the Meyersdale and the Monongahela School system. Dr. Johnston held a bachelor's degree from West Virginia University and a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. She had an interest in genealogy and was a member of the Three Rivers' Chapter of Colonial Dames. She also traveled extensively and in her early years, took a summer long bicycling trip through England, gathering information on Johnstons in those areas. She was a daughter of the late Robert H. and Caroline (Smith) Johnston of Salisbury. She had two siblings: Robert S. Johnston, who died in 1956, and Louise J. Bender, who died in 1986. She is survived by a nephew, Dr. Thomas R. Bender, Morgantown, W.Va.; a niece, Kathryn B. Lindeman of Glen Dale, Md; also a great-nephew, Thomas R. Bender, currently an undergraduate at the University of Idaho; and a great-niece, Laura Ann Bender, a graduate student at West Virginia University. Friends will be received today (Friday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Thomas Funeral Home, Salisbury, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating.
