Kantner, 77, (Colonel U.S.M.C. Retired) died Nov. 15, 1995, in Durham, N.C. Born Sept. 6, 1918, in Somerset, son of the late J. Ralph Kantner and Mabel (Jones) Kantner. Survived by his wife, Beth (McClees) Kantner, and daughter, Katherine Kantner, Durham; brother, Robert S. Kantner, and sister, Louise K. Longridge, both of Somerset; also survived by two nieces and two stepchildren. He was a graduate of Somerset High School (1936) and Penn State University (1940) with a B.S. degree in forestry. Two months later he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. During WW II he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Postwar assignments included a tour of duty with the NATO staff in Europe, at the Pentagon and Marine headquarters in Washington, D.C., and three years as instructor in naval science at Duke University. Funeral services and burial (with military honors) were held in Durham Nov. 17, 1995. Daily American, November 24, 1995 [K0079]
