"Smokie" 08/19/08 Daily American Galen M. "Smokie" Kaufman, 75, Thomas Mills, was saved by grace and went to reside with our Lord and Savior on Aug. 17, 2008, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born March 6, 1933, in Ogletown, the son of Merle and Ruth (Harshberger) Kaufman. Preceded in death by parents; stepmother, Dorothy (Coyle) Kaufman; grandson, Sawyer Ritter; and brother-in- law, Lowman Berkey. Survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Sarah L. "Sally" Berkey; children, Tammie, married to Keith Ritter, Sterling, Va.; Kathy Bailie, at home; and David, married to the former Melissa Donovan, Jackson Hole, Wyo.; grandsons, Carson, Eli and Daniel. Brother of Marlin, married to the former Joann Strayer, Franklin, N.C.; Sonya, married to Wendell Eller, Bridgewater, Va.; Arlene, married to James Shaffer, Johnstown; and Gary, married to Edith "Lucy" Krumbine, Johnstown. Attended Richland High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was an operating engineer for the Operating Engineers Local 66. "Ain't nothin' finer than a pipe liner." Member of Maple Spring Church of the Brethren, the VFW, the American Legion and the NRA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working puzzle books. He and Sally were also "auction addicts" and flea marketers. Galen was "grandfather" to many of his neighborhood kids. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Viewing from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville. Viewing also from 10 a.m. until time of service 11 a.m. Thursday at Maple Spring Church. The Rev. Robert Thacker and the Rev. William Wenger officiating.
