All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ _______________________________________________ HENRIETTA SPANGLER KAUFMAN Henrietta Spangler Kaufman, 101, former resident of Shrewsbury and Stewartstown, died peacefully late in the evening of Nov. 8, 2004, at the Dallastown Nursing Center, Dallastown. Born March 16, 1903, in New Haven, Conn., a daughter of Arthur and Frances (Doherty) Spangler. Preceded in death by husband, the Rev. Ralph E. Kaufman, who died in 1985; twin children, Elizabeth Burzese and William Kaufman; sister Miriam Raley; and brothers John, Earl and Michael Spangler. Mrs. Kaufman is survived by daughters, Janet Moxley and husband, Thomas, Aberdeen, Md.; and Sarah Richardson and husband James, Shrewsbury. Also surviving is her daughter-in-law Corinne Kaufman, Dallastown. Mrs. Kaufman was a beloved grandmother to 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Kaufman spent her childhood years in Somerset County and began her teaching career there. She also taught several years at Stewartstown Elementary School. She was a faithful member of Stewartstown Presbyterian Church, where she was active in Presbyterian Women and the Sunday School, serving as superintendent of the youth department for many years. A graduate of Boswell High School, she also attended Indiana Normal School and Albright College, where she earned a place on the debating team. She was a member of Tau Kappa Alpha honorary fraternity, the WCTU and The Barrens Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists. Henrietta was a true helpmate to her husband as he served the Cross Creek and West Alexander Presbyterian churches of Washington County and the Stewartstown Presbyterian Church. Retirement years were spent in Shrewsbury, where the Kaufmans were founding members of the Happy Seniors. Visitors will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary Inc., 19 S. Main St., Stewartstown, and from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Stewartstown Presbyterian Church, 16 College Ave., Stewartstown, with a service of witness to the resurrection at 3 p.m. Interment in the church cemetery.
