Keim was born March 5th, 1845, died March 30th, 1930, at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Alexander Gilbert, in Portsmouth, Va., at the age of 85 years and 25 days. On November 19, 1865, he was married to Hester McVicker, who preceded him to the grave 22 years ago. To this union were born nine children of which seven survive, namely: Frank, of Chambersburg, Pa.; Charles, of Rock Lake, North Dakota; Mary, wife of C. A. Beachy, of Grantsville, Md.; Lucinda, wife of Emanuel Colflesh, of Somerfield; Carrie, wife of F. O. Weller, of Summit Mills; Maggie, wife of Alvin Rodamer, of Springs; Robert, of Summit Mills. Nathan and Alice are deceased. He is also survived by 34 grandchildren and 32 great- grandchildren. He was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. He was a veteran of the Civil War, serving as a private of Company D, 133rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, for nine months and receiving an honorable discharge. His son, Robert, left on Monday noon for Virginia to accompany the body to Meyersdale where it was taken in charge by Undertaker J. L. Tressler, who conveyed it to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alvin Rodamer at Springs, Wednesday morning. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Springs Mennonite Church. The service was conducted by Rev. Gideon D. Miller, assisted by Rev. Milton B. Miller. The flag-draped casket containing the remains was then conveyed to the Springs Cemetery where interment was made under auspices of McKinley Camp, Sons of Veterans, of Meyersdale, with the solemn ritual of that patriotic organization which supplied a uniformed escort acting as pallbearers. The burial service was read by Capt. Leonard Engle and Commander Frank C. Robertson. Young Paul Robertson, member of the Sons of Veterans Boys Fife and Drum Corps, softly played "Nearer My God to Thee" on the fife. C. W. Baldwin stationed at some distance from the grave sounded "taps" on the bugle. Jonas S. Keim was born in Elk Lick Township near St. Paul Church. He was a son of Jacob Keim and was the youngest and last surviving member of a large family. Many years ago he operated a small tannery in Salisbury. Meyersdale Republican, April 10, 1930
