Grant PASSING OF GRANT KENDALL, Prominent Man, Native of Somerset County, Dies at Michigan Sanitarium, His Career a very Successful One. U. S. Grant Kendall, one of Somerset's native citizens, who had gone forth from home and achieved success, died in the prime of his life on Christmas evening at the St. Joseph Sanitarium, Mt. Clemens, Mich. at the age of 49 years, 2 months and 29 days. Mr. Kendall was born in Greenville Township, his father being the late John Kendall. Early in life the young man began to prepare himself educationally for the career of an attorney. He attended school at the National Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio, then he entered the West Virginia State University at Morgantown; at this time in his career he accepted the principal ship of the Somerset Borough schools, continuing there for one year. With his chosen profession in mind he entered Yale University and remained there until he had completed both the classical course and that of law. He began the practice of his profession at Fairmont, W. Va. and later was the choice for the people for mayor of that thriving city. As his legal qualifications became known, he was elected to the bench, serving as judge in the intermediate courts. Subsequently Judge Kendall located in Detroit where he was succeeding in a marked degree. Some time ago Mr. Kendall became afflicted with cancer of the intestines. He was taken to the hospital where he died and while two very critical operations were performed but to no purpose. His physician at the sanitarium was Dr. Berry who is a brother of the Bishop. There were with Mr. Kendall during his last days; his brother, Hon S. A. Kendall, his sister, Miss Mattie and his nephew Leroy Rembold. The remains were brought to Meyersdale on Monday and taken to the home of Mr. Samuel Kendall in charge of undertaker Reich. On Wednesday afternoon funeral services were held at the house conducted by Rev. D. W. Michael and also at the Hochstetter Church by Rev. E. K. Hochstetter after which interment was made in the family burial plot at that place. The pall bearers were sin nephews of the deceased: The two sons of Mr. S. A. Kendall, Jno. W. of Haverford College and Samuel A. Jr. of Washington and Lee University; Eugene, son of Mr. J. L. Kendall, of Pittsburg, who is also a student at Haverford; Leroy Rembold, of Detroit, and Chas. Decker, both of Detroit, and Robt. Baker of Meyersdale, assistant at the B. & O. station at this place. Mr. Grant Kendall never married. The surviving brothers and sisters are: John C. Kendall, of Oakland, Md.; Hon. Samuel Kendall, of Meyersdale; Mrs. Joseph E. Baker, of Sand Patch' Mrs. Jno. W. Baker, Meyersdale; Mrs. Jno. H. Rembold, of Sand Patch; Miss Mattie Kendall, principal of Ward schools at Homestead. U. S. Grant Kendall's chief business qualifications in addition to his thorough preparation, was that he was attentive to a high degree, in anything entrusted to his care. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Meyersdale Commercial, Dec. 30, 1915
