KENDALL John Lee Kendall, 76, died at his home near Beachdale last Friday afternoon, after nearly four years' illness. He was a son of the late William and Louise (Boone) Kennell of Southampton Township, most of whose descendants now go by the surname Kendall. His mother was reputed to be a descendant of the famous pioneer frontiersman, Daniel Boone, who was a native of Berks County, Pa. John L. Kendall was a man of diversified accomplishments and activities. From early youth he had strong religious convictions and at the age of 16 conducted evangelistic services in West Virginia and was widely known as "the boy evangelist". He was for many years a member of the Temple Evangelical Church near White Oak, Larimer Township, and frequently acted as an exhorter in various rural churches, including the ones at Blackfield and Cross Roads in Summit Township. For many years Mr. Kendall operated a small farm and an apple-butter factory along the Plank road in Larimer Township, and for some time officiated as a justice of the peace in that township, being familiarly known to most of his acquaintances as "Squire" Kendall. He was a handy man with tools and worked as a carpenter for some years. He was a public-spirited citizen and always interested in the moral, spiritual and economical welfare of his fellow citizens, and of the rising generations. Mr. Kendall married Amanda Bittner when he was a young man. He was a devoted husband and father. Mrs. Kendall passed away in 1941, a loss from which he never fully recovered. Surviving are nine children - Mrs. Walter F. Saylor, Sand Patch; Mrs. Clyde W. Ickes, and Mrs. Raymond Mankamyer, Berlin; Mrs. Robert Hawk, Akron, Ohio; Mrs. George Horning, Mrs. John Robinson, Irvin Kendall, Mrs. Charles Mitchell and Mrs. J. F. Keller, Garrett. He also leaves 47 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother, William Kendall, Garrett, and two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Porter and Mrs. Edward Glass, Wellersburg. His oldest son, Harvey J. Kendall, served with Co. C, 110th Infantry, in World War I, and suffered from poison gas and hardships as a prisoner of war in Germany, which impaired his health and resulted in his death several years ago. During his latter years Squire Kendall lived in Brothersvalley Township where he passed away. As a climax to his career, he wrote his own funeral sermon, which was read at his obsequies by his last pastor, Rev. A. J. Replogle of the Garrett Church of the Brethren. The funeral services on April 30 were held in the Temple Evangelical Church, at White Oak, where he worshipped for many years, and where he wished to be laid to rest.
