All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ WILLIAM KENDALL William Kendall, born Dec. 25, 1842, died May 31, 1932, at his home near Deal, in Larimer Township, aged 89 years, 5 months and 6 days. He was the last surviving Civil War veteran in that section, having served 44 months in the Union Army, from 1861 - 1865, inclusive, in Co. G, 54th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. After the war he settled on a little farm where he lived the remainder of his long life. He was twice married, his first wife having been Louisa Boone, a descendent of Daniel Boone, the famous hunter and frontiersman. His second wife, who died about five years ago, was Sarah Bishop. He was looked after in his old age by his son, Ira Franklin, who lived with him on the old place. He passed away very peacefully at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, and was smiling and conscious until the last. Mr. Kendall led a quiet peaceable life. He was a member of the Temple Evangelical Church near White Oak, where the funeral was held on Thursday afternoon, the pastor, assisted by Rev. Mankamyer, officiating. He was buried in White Oak Cemetery with military honors by Charles E. Kelly Post, American Legion, of Meyersdale. Mr. Kendall was the father of 12 children, 10 by his first and two by his second wife. The surviving children of the first wife are John L. Kendall of Garrett R.D. 1; Simon W. Kendall of Sand Patch R.D. 2; Mrs. Tillie Porter and Mrs. Mary Porter, both of Barrelsville, Md. The children of the second wife, both surviving, are: Ira Franklin Kendall of Sand Patch R.D. 2, and Mrs. Miles Crosby of Glencoe. He also left 31 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
