Kern, 73, of Star Route, Normalville, died Nov. 21, 1997 in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Nov. 9, 1924 in Mill Run the son of the late Homer and Maude Firestone Kern. He was the founder and owner of Kern Brothers Lumber Company for over 45 years. He was a member of the Indian Creek Baptist Church, Mill Run, where he served on the board of directors for many years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army in the 748th Field Artillery Battalion. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 6743, Donegal, member of the Central Pennsylvania Truckers Association and the Somerset County Truckers Association and was a member of the Mill Run Grange. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Gertrude Lohr Kern in 1980. He is survived by four sons, Gerald Ray Kern and his wife Marlene Firestone of Normalville, Robert Kern and his wife Lois Richter of Normalville, Terry Kern and his wife Donna Newill of Somerset and Richard Kern and his wife Nina Burnsworth of Normalville; one daughter Roxanne Kern of Normalville; 11 grandchildren, Brian Kern, Cheryl Kern Shaulis, Kelly Kern Miner, Tara Kern, Jerimia Kern, Melissa Kern, Brent Kern, Jessica Kern, Jenny Kern, Johnny Kern and Erin Kern; 5 great grandchildren, Brittney Shaulis, Zachary Kern, Alex Kern, Carrigan Shaulis and Nathan Miner; two brothers, Homer Kern and his wife Idella and Howard Rayburn Kern, all of Normalville; three sisters, Nettie Pritts of Mill Run, Mrs. Daniel "Eddie" (Martha) Stark of Warren, Ohio and Mrs. Earl "Buck" (Pauline) Brewer of Apache Junction, Ariz. Friends will be received at the Clyde Brooks Funeral Home Inc., Route 711, Melcroft, from 2-9 p.m., Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. John Davis and Rev. Mark Pasquarette officiating. Interment will follow in the Indian Creek Baptist Cemetery, Mill Run. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Donegal VFW Post 6743. Daily American, November 22, 1997 [K0412]
