Coroner P. C. Dosch and County Detective Harry C. Jacobs conducted an investigation and announced that the preliminary probe indicated that Kimmel had died as a result of exposure. Sub- zero temperatures were reported throughout the County Sunday night and Monday morning. Coroner Dosch and Detective Jacobs learned that Kimmel had accompanied Harry Croyle of Stoystown R.D. 2 to Friedens Sunday night and that later the two men and Mildred Smith had gone to Somerset. Upon returning to Friedens shortly after midnight it was said that Kimmel apparently was asleep in the car. Croyle left his companion in the machine. He returned shortly before 4 o'clock and was unable to awaken Kimmel. Croyle found that his car had been frozen up. He enlisted the aid of another man and pushed the machine to Horner's Garage, located nearby. There is was discovered that Kimmel was dead. Authorities were then notified. Joseph Kimmel had been employed as a trackman by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. He served an enlistment in the Army and was honorably discharged four years ago. His father is dead. His mother and three sisters survive. Meyersdale Republican, December 24, 1942
