Kistler, 87, Ligonier, died March 9, 2008, in Select Specialty Care, Latrobe. He was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Irwin, a son of the late Harry E. and Jennie Ponsetti Kistler. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Ann (Koski) Kistler in 1981. Mr. Kistler is survived by his only son, Edward A. (and his wife Lynette) Kistler III, Ligonier; his loving granddaughter, Angel Kistler, Ligonier; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Prior to his retirement in 1982, he had been employed as the band director for North Star High School for more than 33 years. He received his BS in music from Indiana University, his MS in music from Duquesne University, and also attended West Virginia University and the Eastman School of Music. His musical career involved playing with the "Quintones" at Mt. View for 27 years along with playing professionally with Allan McKay, Frankie Carroll, Graham Grubbs and Don Glasser. He was the musical director for the "Village Musicians of Ligonier" singing group "Reason Why," the "Tam O'Shanters" of Somerset, for the musical productions of "Oklahoma" and "Hello Dolly" at the Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown, as well as the musical arranger for several area dance bands. He also was the musical director for the former Derry Drum & Bugle Corps and the Lloydsville Fife & Drum Corp. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II having been stationed in England. While in England he had his own band known as the "Eddie Kistler Swingtips." One of his greatest acheivements was playing with the infamous Glenn Miller. He was a member of the Greensburg Musical Society and the Burtoonwood Association in England. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the J. Paul McCracken Funeral Chapel, Inc., 144 East Main Street, Ligonier, where his life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday with his pastor, the Rev. Frederick C. Vanderhoff officiating. Interment will follow in the Ligonier Valley Cemetery.
