Knecht, 37, a general contractor who was a lifelong resident of Falls Church, Va., died Nov. 25, 1996. He was the grandson of the late Joseph Adam Knecht and a nephew of James W. Knecht of Meyersdale. Knecht died in the collapse of an 11-foot deep ditch on Nottingham Street in McLean, Va. He was excavating for a foundation, got off his backhoe to inspect the ditch, and was pinned under the earth when a side of the ditch collapsed. Knecht was a graduate of Falls Church High School and had attended George Mason University. He served in the Marine Corps and had been in the contracting business since 1980. Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Jane Morrissey Knecht; and their children: Joseph Knecht and Anna Knecht. He is also survived by his parents, Sloan and Cecilia Knecht, all of Falls Church. Va.; four sisters: Margaret Reingruber of La Plata, Va.; Mary O'Connor of Greenlawn, N.Y.; Grace Ann Weedem of Bay Village, Ohio; and Cathy Williamson of Missouri City, Tex.; and one brother, Mike Knecht of Sterling, Va. A Mass of Christian Burial was given at St. James Catholic Church Nov. 30. Interment with military honors was given at St. James Cemetery.
